Chelsea defeated Newcastle United with a dramatic equalizer in the last minute, leading the game to a penalty shootout.

Chelsea won a close penalty shoot-out against Newcastle in the quarterfinals of the 2023-2024 English Football League Cup (Carabao Cup) held at Stamford Bridge in London, England on the 20th (Korean time).

Chelsea has continued to struggle since the start of the season. Chelsea is ranked 10th in the league with 6 wins, 4 draws, and 7 losses. It is difficult to make a rebound. 토토사이트

However, things are going smoothly in the League Cup. Starting with Wimbledon held last August

they defeated Brighton & Hove Albion and Blackburn to reach the quarterfinals, and even defeated Newcastle to advance to the semifinals.

They will challenge to win the League Cup for the first time in eight years since the 2014-2015 season

and will challenge for the finals two seasons after finishing runner-up in the 2021-2022 season.

On the other hand, Newcastle, which is causing a sensation after the Saudi sovereign wealth fund (PIF) took over the team

seemed to be seeking revenge for last season’s League Cup runners-up, but fell to Chelsea in the quarterfinals.

Newcastle, which had bounced back from a slump at the beginning of this season

has recently begun to falter due to suspensions and injuries to key players.

Including today’s game, they have recorded 3 wins, 1 draw, and 6 losses in the last 10 games.

Chelsea used a 4-2-3-1 formation. Nicolason Jackson, Raheem Sterling-Enso Fernández-Cole Palmer, Connor Gallagher-Moises Caicedo,

Levi Colwill-Benoit Badiacil-Thiago Silva-Axel Disasi and Djordje Petrovic participated.

Newcastle used a 4-3-3 formation. Anthony Gordon, Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron, Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimaraes, Luis Miley, Valentino Libramento, Sven Botman, Jamal Russells, Emil Kraft, and Martin Dubravka.

Chelsea took the lead in the first half, but it was Newcastle who struck the net first.

Wilson, who cut off Chelsea’s back pass in the 15th minute of the first half, quickly led a counterattack.

Chelsea’s two central defenders seemed to be blocking Wilson

but Wilson, who competed until the end, did not miss Badiasil’s mistake and scored the first goal.

Chelsea put pressure on Newcastle again. In the 27th minute of the first half, Sterling exchanged passes with Caicedo on the left side and continued shooting from inside the box, but missed.

A minute later, Gallagher on the right gave up a cutback pass and Sterling tried to score the goal again

but was blocked by goalkeeper Dubravka.

A variable occurred in Chelsea. In the 32nd minute of the first half

Armando Broya was brought in to replace Enso, who felt uncomfortable.

Then, in the 37th minute of the first half, Broya penetrated the space behind the defense and succeeded in scoring,

but was declared offside.

In the second half, Newcastle also had a variable. Gordon, who had previously fallen due to Caicedo’s tackle, sat down.

Matt Ritchie was immediately brought in to continue the game.

Chelsea strengthened its attack by introducing Christopher Nkunku, Ian Maatsen, and Michailo Mudric.

Chelsea, who continued to pound on Newcastle’s goal, smiled at the end. In the 2nd minute of added time in the second half

substitute Kieran Trippier cleared Malo Gusteau’s cross from the right, but Mudric

who was rushing, connected with a shot to tie the score at 1-1.

During regular time, the two teams were unable to decide on a winner. According to competition regulations

both teams immediately headed to a penalty shootout. Newcastle’s second kicker, Trippier, and fourth kicker, Ritchie

were blocked by the opponent’s goalkeeper, and Chelsea advanced to the semifinals with a penalty shootout score of 4-2.
