Come-from-behind three-run homer gives Samsung 8-6 win

The Samsung Lions rode the cannon of ‘transfer student’ Park Byung-ho to victory. Hanwha was at its worst with injuries to Ryu Hyun-jin and Jonathan Peraza.

Samsung won 8-6 at home against the Hanwha Eagles in the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League at Samsung Lions Park in Daegu on Nov. 31.

The win was the second in a row for Samsung, which finally reached the 30-win plateau with a record of 30 wins, one draw and 25 losses. Hanwha, which failed to win its sixth straight game, dropped one spot to eighth place with 24 wins, one draw and 30 losses.

Samsung starter Kim Dae-woo pitched 2.1 innings of four-hit, no-decision ball, striking out four and walking one. The fourth pitcher, Lim Chang-min, was the lucky winner with one scoreless inning.

Park Byung-ho earned the win. Park went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs, including the game-winning triple.

Right-hander Park Sang-won took the loss for Hanwha, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings.

Even before the game started, Hanwha faced a major setback. At 18:00, 30 minutes before the game, the KBO announced that “Ryu Hyun-jin, who was scheduled to start for Hanwha in the Hanwha-Samsung game in Daegu, has been replaced by Kim Kyu-yeon due to injury.” Ryu reportedly complained of elbow discomfort.

The big one happened in the sixth inning. Hanwha’s left fielder Peraza caught Yang Woo-hyun’s pitch and slammed into the fence. Peraza complained of chest pain and was taken off the field by ambulance. Choi In-ho came in to replace Peraza.
