Come-from-behind three-run homer gives Samsung 8-6 win

The Samsung Lions rode the cannon of ‘transfer student’ Park Byung-ho to victory. Hanwha was at its worst with injuries to Ryu Hyun-jin and Jonathan Peraza.

Samsung won 8-6 at home against the Hanwha Eagles in the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League at Samsung Lions Park in Daegu on Nov. 31.

The win was the second in a row for Samsung, which finally reached the 30-win plateau with a record of 30 wins, one draw and 25 losses. Hanwha, which failed to win its sixth straight game, dropped one spot to eighth place with 24 wins, one draw and 30 losses.

Samsung starter Kim Dae-woo pitched 2.1 innings of four-hit, no-decision ball, striking out four and walking one. The fourth pitcher, Lim Chang-min, was the lucky winner with one scoreless inning.

Park Byung-ho earned the win. Park went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs, including the game-winning triple.

Right-hander Park Sang-won took the loss for Hanwha, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 1.1 innings.

Even before the game started, Hanwha faced a major setback. At 18:00, 30 minutes before the game, the KBO announced that “Ryu Hyun-jin, who was scheduled to start for Hanwha in the Hanwha-Samsung game in Daegu, has been replaced by Kim Kyu-yeon due to injury.” Ryu reportedly complained of elbow discomfort.

Samsung took full advantage of the rushed Kim. In the first inning, leadoff hitter Koo Ja-rook was hit by a ball in the calf and went to first base. Samsung manager Park Jin-man immediately brought in a pinch-hitter, Kim Ji-chan, who took advantage of a stolen base and McKinnon’s grounder to third. Hanwha fought back. A hit by pitch and a throwing error put runners on first and second, and Kim Tae-yeon opened the inning with a single up the middle. Jonathan Peraza struck out swinging, but Noh Si-hwan followed with a single to right. Ahn Chi-hong followed with an infield fly to third base, but Chae Eun-sung hit a three-pitch curveball from reliever Kim Dae-woo for a grand slam. It was Chae’s fourth home run of the season.

The big one happened in the sixth inning. Hanwha’s left fielder Peraza caught Yang Woo-hyun’s pitch and slammed into the fence. Peraza complained of chest pain and was taken off the field by ambulance. Choi In-ho came in to replace Peraza. Samsung got back-to-back singles from Kim Ji-chan and McKinnon to put 토토사이트 runners on first and third before Lee Sung-kyu hit an RBI double to left-center to tie the game at 5-5. Hanwha didn’t give up. With runners on first and third in the seventh, Kim Tae-yeon hit a sacrifice fly to center field to cut the deficit to two runs, 8-6. Hanwha loaded the bases in the eighth inning with two singles and a walk, but Hwang Young-mook hit a short fly ball to right field and Kim Kang-min grounded out to third base.

Oh Seung-hwan got the final out with three outs in the ninth to give Samsung the 8-6 win.
